Best used cars for carpoolingAs the school year rapidly approaches, many families will be faced with having to bring kids from activity to activity. This can be especially tough if parents are involved in carpools and will need a bigger car to accommodate all the children. Luckily, used SUVs have dropped in price since January, and there are certain models that stand out above the rest.

According to a study conducted by CarGurus, the most cost-effective used SUV for families is the 2008 GMC Acadia. This spacious vehicle can seat eight passengers, making it a good fit for parents who have to take lots of kids from place to place. Additionally, it gets an efficient 24 miles per gallon on the highway, all for under $25,000.

As for crossover models, the 2008 Honda Pilot is an excellent pick, experts say. It can fit eight children as well, while costing drivers under $20,000.

"If you are looking to upsize your car and save money, now is a good time to be shopping for used cars and specifically for SUVs, crossovers, and minivans, which have not seen the dramatic price increases of many compact models," CarGurus CEO Langley Steinert said.ADNFCR-2112-ID-800577100-ADNFCR

iPhone apps can help save money on gasFrom playing games to paying bills, smartphones have made almost every aspect of life a little bit easier. That applies to saving money on gas as well, as Forbes magazines recently unveiled its list of top iPhone apps that can help drivers reduce the amount of cash they spend on filling up at the pump.

Perhaps the most useful program is the AAA TripTik Mobile. This easy-to-use app provides drivers with the locations of the lowest-priced gas in the area. Not only that, but it will also give them turn-by-turn directions to make finding the gas station even easier.

In addition to finding the best-priced gas, apps can also help drivers maintain their fuel economy. According the publication, the Gas Manager program can do everything from tracking a car's gas consumption to miles traveled and even its environmental impact.

Along with picking up a few apps for their iPhone, drivers can also save money on gas by getting behind the wheel of a fuel-efficient car such as a Ford Focus or Toyota Camry. Those in the market for a used car can head to New Jersey Auto Auction, which offers plenty of makes and models at affordable prices.

Tips to maintain cars with high mileageMost drivers want to get as many miles out of their car as possible. While some might limit their cars to 75,000 miles, it's not surprising to find motorists who want to push their cars to the limit and reach the 150,000 mile milestone and beyond. However, high-mileage cars certainly present a number of different challenges compared to lesser-used vehicles, but according to AutoMD.com, with some smart upkeep, there's no reason why you can't push your car to the limit.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember if you're behind the wheel of a car with a lot of miles is that you can't ignore regular service. In fact, some experts say that making sure you're keeping up with maintenance is more important than ever. Specifically, you should still change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles and also pay special attention to your brakes.

In addition to maintaining your car, you will also want to change up the way your drive it. In its younger days, you almost certainly could have pushed it to the limit, but in its older, and more worn out, condition, you'll have to take it easy. There are a number of obvious things to avoid, including driving too fast and off-roading, but towing a trailer and braking harshly can also take their toll.

Although your car may be over the 100,000 mile mark, it doesn't' mean you should ignore how it looks. In particular, older cars' finish are more susceptible to sustaining damage from the elements, which could lead to troublesome rust. To ensure your aged car doesn't fall victim to such a fate, either park your car in a garage or purchase a cover to protect it.

It almost goes without saying that tires are an especially important component to a car, but this is especially true in one that has been around longer than others. Not only can under-inflated and worn down tires create a less-than-ideal drive, they can also be dangerous. Drivers should always make sure their tires have enough air in them, and experts also suggest rotating and balancing them whenever you get your oil changed. Additionally, regularly checking for uneven wear is a must.

"It’s important for drivers to not only continue to maintain their vehicles, but also have a financial emergency plan in place should they be faced with a sudden unexpected auto repair bill,"

Preventative maintenance important in economic crunchAs hard as it may be to come to terms with, car repairs are unavoidable. Whether it be caused by regular wear and tear, or an unfortunate defect with the automobile, having to pony up the cash to get a car fixed is often looked up on as just part of owning one.

Despite the frequency of car repairs, more and more drivers are becoming less likely to take their cars to the mechanic - even if they need it. A recent survey by the American Automobile Association (AAA) shows that economic conditions have made motorists unable to pay the steep bills.

Specifically, the study found that about 25 percent of respondents admitted to ignoring or putting off repairs and maintenance doing to the unstable economy. The practice could end up hurting drivers more than they realize in the long run.

"It’s important for drivers to not only continue to maintain their vehicles, but also have a financial emergency plan in place should they be faced with a sudden unexpected auto repair bill," said AAA vice president of automotive and financial services, Marshall L. Doney.

Although many drivers may be struggling financially, that is no excuse to neglect the regular upkeep of your car. There are many things that you can do on your own to ensure that your ride runs smoothly and help avoid any costly repairs later on.

One of the biggest things that you can take care of on your own is changing the air filters. Most experts recommend changing it about once a year, or every 15,000 miles depending on the conditions in which you drive Failing to do can result in a number of issues, including lowered fuel economy and emissions problems.

Of course, regularly checking the oil can save you a lot of time and money down the road, and it is not too difficult to do. While your car is parked on flat ground, check the oil with the dipstick, and if it is black or deep red it's time to get it changed.

Additionally, many drivers can save some hassle in the long run by checking the battery on a regular basis. This may seem simple, but making sure that it's not leaking or lacking water may prevent you from being stranded far from home.
