Hot weather car care tips

Hot weather car care tipsAlthough many people take appropriate steps to keep themselves cool during the summer months, they may overlook the temperature of their cars. However, according to AAA, the warmer months present a number of hazards to automobiles, and drivers should take precautions.

"While many drivers think about the importance of readying their vehicle for cold weather in winter, it’s important to not forget about the need also to prepare for hot summer months," said John Nielsen, AAA National Director of Auto Repair, Buying Services and Consumer Information.

One of the biggest temperature-related issues cars can experience is the death of a battery. Experts say that extreme heat and vibration can cause serious problems in batteries, and drivers should be sure that their batteries are firmly rooted so they do not move around.

Additionally, drivers should be wary of how much fluid is in their cars. Along with providing much-needed lubrication, fluids also cool down a car's components when it becomes too hot, and if there are low levels - whether it be of motor oil, transmission fluid or brake fluid - there can be serious problems.

As a final tip, AAA recommends keeping one's tires properly inflated to reduce the chances of a blowout on hot pavement.

Educate yourself to avoid costly maintenance fees this summer

Educate yourself to avoid costly maintenance fees this summerThere are few things better than heading out for a mid-summer road trip, but if your car is not up to the task, the excursion could be short lived. However, AutoMD.com recently offered a few maintenance tips to ensure that your ride can make it there and back again, where ever there might be.

One of the most common misconceptions about cars is that they need regular tune-ups performed by mechanics. Instead of spending money on these costly, and unnecessary trips, experts suggest simply performing preventative maintenance yourself. Specifically, regularly replacing the air filter and inspecting the drive belts can ensure your car is ready to go.

In addition to regularly checking up on certain parts, experts suggest familiarizing oneself with what each dashboard light represents. By being aware of what the signal could indicate, it can save you time and money when looking to fix it.

"At AutoMD.com, we believe that when consumers become more educated about how and when to service their car, this can translate into savings at the repair shop," said Brian Hafer, VP of Marketing for AutoMD.com.
