How to get your car ready for the winter
| October 04, 2011 12:00 AM |
Winter may still be a few months off, but it is never too early to start thinking about winterizing your car, especially given the havoc the cold weather can wreak if you're not properly prepared. From pot holes causing damage to the wheels to salt causing significant rust build up, the stretch can be unkind to cars, but by making the right choices can prevent some of the worst damage.
Many of the steps you can take are simple maintenance that you can do all year round. For instance, checking your tire pressure and making sure they are properly inflated will help maintain traction when conditions worsen, Edmunds.com reports.
You will also want to inspect the battery to make sure it is in good working condition before the weather sets in. You should have it tested at an auto repair facility to ensure that it will make it through the winter.
Also of utmost importance is the defrosting and heating systems. Nothing can be worse than having to scrape off inches of ice from the windshield while your car heats up, so make sure it is in working order before it's too late.
